Reflections of a Year 10 Student

I was a member of the Year 10 group that you spoke to on the day that you came to our school. I thought that the way you spoke was truly amazing. The things that I learnt that day really touched my heart and made me think not just about how lucky I am to be alive, but also to appreciate what I have.

My sister has just turned 19. Recently she found out that she was pregnant and the news really took my family by surprise. I really thought that she wouldn’t be able to cope and that she would have an abortion, mainly because my father is quite strict and I thought he wouldn’t support her.

She is now due to have the baby in 2 weeks and my whole family (including my dad) are as excited as ever. She is so well and just like a different person. After hearing you speak that day it changed the whole way I thought about my sister’s life and I thank you so much for that.

Special reflections of two Year 9 female students

  • It informed me on certain stats and biological information outlining the motives and harm ‘involved’ in abortions. It also helped me realise how much society has devalued life itself. It showed how easy it is for each of us to be caught up in a situation like pregnancy. ‘It’s not going to happen to me’ is a naive statement and I have to remind myself to keep out of tempting situations (like sex) to avoid drastic decisions (like abortion)to cover up my mitsakes. The information on aborted children really hit me as a “New Age Holocaust” and I couldn’t get my head around how people today fight for such alternatives to be available for slfish/unfortunate teens/parents. The talk really emphasized how important it is to stick up for the ’small and vulnerable’ as human beings with human rights equivalent to mine …
  • The talk gave spiritual, emotional and scientific reasons why it is wrong to get an abortion. It was interesting and inspiring and it helped me to know how to talk to someone considering an abortion. It would be very good for someone who’d never thought deeply about this issue. The information reminded me not to put myself in a position that makes even considering abortion necessary or possible. It helped me to know that if I make a mistake, it would be better in the long run for everyone involved if I keep the baby. Good presentation. Clear. To the point. Honest. Keeps the attention of the class. Inspiring.
